Viagra and its alternatives for treating ED
April 24, 2010
Millions of men are diagnosed with erectile dysfunction every year, making a serious health concern all over the world. Though, it’s completely natural that men develop erectile dysfunction at a later stage of their lives, more and younger men report having this condition, which affects their entire well being. It’s a fact that ED causes numerous psychological problems, lowers self esteem and may be the root of a serious relationship breakdown. Men strongly connect with their sexual abilities and when they cannot perform as they used to it’s a tragedy.
But do not worry, erectile dysfunction is treatable and you can enjoy sex just as you did earlier. It only requires defining the real source of your problem. There’s a range of possible ED treatments that you can employ and they are all prescribed according to the type of factors behind the condition. Here are some of the most common medical treatments for erectile dysfunction:
1) Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is a very effective measure in patients who have psychological problems behind their erectile issues. Things like stress, depression, performance anxiety, relationship problems all contribute to problems with obtaining and maintaining an erection. Stress-induced impotence is quite common with men who are hard working and don’t have the time to relax. A qualified psychotherapist is able to neutralize such conditions and sometimes by simply speaking to a professional the patient can observe a great improvement.
2) Penis pumps
Penis pumps are special devices in the form of a cylinder with a valve mechanism that are used to stimulate erection through the use of vacuum. When the penis is placed inside the cylinder the valve mechanism sucks out the air around it, creating vacuum and increasing the pressure inside the penile shaft. This leads to more blood flowing into the penis and a stronger and more durable erection. There are many types of penis pumps on the market – manual, automatic, with additional arousing features – but they are all built around the same concept.
3) Medications
This is probably the most popular and widely advertised way to treat erectile dysfunction. Drugs like Viagra and generic Viagra formulations have stormed the market and made most people believe that they are the only solution to the problem. Such drugs work by block certain enzymes and stimulating the blood flow into the penis through a chemical reaction (in contrast to penis pumps that use physical effects). Medications are highly effective in cases when ED is caused by physiological conditions such as diabetes, blood pressure problems, heart diseases, etc.
4) Surgery and implants
There are severe cases when no other treatment option can help. The last resort in such a situation is surgery. Sometimes there are physical defects in the anatomy of the penis, which cause erectile problems. Or there may be a consequence of a previously suffered trauma. That’s when doctors get the scalpel. The situation can be resolved either by eliminating the problems that may cause ED or embedding a special prosthesis (implant) to mimic the process of erection. These procedures should only be used in case when no other alternative was fruitful. So if you still have hope for another treatment option you should use it before going down on the surgery table.
